Baxter Remodel Continues
By LA-jan - July 02, 2019
So in the last post I promised you my adventure in the "bush"!
The front yard was a mess of massive proportions!
A buganvilla had invaded the yard by roughly 10 feet in and 10 feet wide.
Another species of invasive "bush" was also about the same.
I had no chain saw, just big loppers and small loppers.
So, I got started.
Bit by bit I chopped and hacked away.
It was around this time, a welcome
visitor from the East showed up!
Dorothy! and Eileen joined us for a
day of clearing and filling trash bins.

I filled the bins in nothing flat.
All in all, it took 3 bins a week for 3 weeks to haul away all this "bush"!
9 huge bins full of this:
Deadly thorns on these
And a vermin hole home here
Must have been the skunk that kept getting under the house!
Finally, a clearing!
Next, the weeds encroaching on the sidewalk
From this. . .
From this. . .
To this
Much Better!
Now, the crumbling retaining wall
starting to look much better!
The yard was literally sliding into the sidewalk and taking down the fence!
French drain in this area too!
One day after a long period of trenching, I sat down with my water jug,
Taylor picked at the dirt next to the new entry with a shovel.
This yard has a small entry gate on one street and a
large "driveway" entrance with a large gate on the other street, since the house is on a corner.
No one could open the small gate that was sealed shut by bushes and 2 foot?
layer of dirt.
Our plan was to figure out a way to use this small gate as the entryway.
We scratched our heads over it and kept saying, "we'll come back to this later".
So, Taylor was picking around with his shovel to see how deep it was to the
bottom of the gate entrance.
"I found a flat rock or cement!"
So, he kept digging. . .
and lo and behold, there is a walkway!!!
A bit cracked, but. . . it could work!
We consulted with our cement expert, Marty,
and many days of hard work later
it looked like this!
Once we had dug it up, Marty leveled out the bad, filled out the missing,
framed it and created a "real" entrance!
It is wonderful!
Next post, the landscaping of this wasteland that is now cleared!
