Mom's Thanksgiving 1942

By LA-jan - November 29, 2012
It was all talk about their Marines! . . . and not much else of Thanksgiving. And she mentions work. I found a letter she had written, a draft, that was never sent. It is to Klyne (yes, Katie, you are right). I was also anxious to find out how she to writes to him after his very "excited" letters we've seen. She...

Letters in the Mail!

By LA-jan - November 25, 2012
Letters! Some of you may have heard that mom kept a shoebox full of soldiers letters well hidden away. Well, it was discovered not long ago! When mom was confronted with her stash, she was a little flustered at the quantity of admiring letters that were in the shoebox! We never went through them, but gave her a little tease and they were...

Operation Uranus

By LA-jan - November 23, 2012
General Zhukov He was the most decorated general officer in the history of the Soviet Union and Russia. He launched a counteroffensive attack that encircled the entire German 6th Army, the single largest Nazi troop formation of the time. It was November 19th, 1942. Mom made note of it in her diary. But, not before a perfectly ordinary  and not so wonderful day:...

Thrills for the girls during a lunch downtown!

By LA-jan - November 21, 2012
Believe it or not, this is still on "Armistice Day"! I just noticed, she continued her entry on the next page, too! How exciting it must have been! Soldiers everywhere! OMG,  she overpaid lunch 20 cents! I'd like to think it looked something like this. . .    minus the beach attire. Or this . . .    Happy Thanksgiving, I've got some...

Veterans Day

By LA-jan - November 12, 2012

A thanks goes out to all soldiers, but in light of these posts from the 1940's, a special thanks goes out to those special soldiers that contributed to mom's "wild year"! I don't know which soldier in this picture sent this one, but I'm sure mom was excited to get an overseas delivery!...

A really busy post!

By LA-jan - November 07, 2012
This is a long post, partially because Mom ran on her diary entries  from one page to the next without a break and back and forth due to the busy weekends she had! I thought a little history would help us appreciate what was going on in her world while she was dizzy with soldiers! "Armistice Day (which overlaps with Remembrance Day) is...

Now she's got a problem. . .

By LA-jan - November 04, 2012
This entry really helps me remember that mom was only 20 years old. So much history going on all around her and she's got "boy problems"! I love it! And of course, what does a girl turn to when her heart is in turmoil? She most likely hurried out of work to purchase her favorite new records, then probably listened to them over...

Mom has been on my mind. . .

By LA-jan - November 01, 2012
Mom has been on my mind lately. Well, the house is full of pictures. Pictures of her and Pat and the girls from 1942.  Pictures of their "wild year". I've been talking to Terry lately about how I've been wanting to see mom again. Then, I mentioned Dad's anniversary of his passing is coming up. 38 years. Wow. I came home the other...
